Research Infrastructures in Europe – Development, Sustainability and Inclusion
Wednesday, 18 September 2024
Venue: Research Centre for Natural Sciences, 1117 Budapest, Magyar Tudósok Körútja 2
The future competitiveness of the European Research Area (ERA) in science and technology depends on a robust Research Infrastructure (RI), encompassing both state-of-the-art facilities and skilled personnel. These RIs, which range from large-scale facilities like synchrotrons to smaller analytical tools and databases, support cutting-edge research across diverse fields such as AI, climate change, nanotechnology, and quantum computing.
Europe’s RIs have grown organically, with access often funded by EC Framework programs, but future sustainability is under discussion. New funding and structural models, such as European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs) and Associations international sans but lucrative (AISBLs), are emerging, and there is a need for shared operational models and best practices.
A one-day meeting, following the ESFRI meeting in Szeged in September 2024, will focus on the sustainability of ERA RIs and widening participation across these infrastructures.
