ESFRI Publishes Activity Report 2021-2023: Advancing the European Research Area
18.12.2024

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has published its Activity Report 2021-2023, providing a detailed account of its contributions to strengthening the European Research Area (ERA). The report captures ESFRI’s strategic achievements, showcasing its role in fostering collaboration, innovation, and resilience within Europe’s Research Infrastructure ecosystem.

One of the most significant milestones was the publication of the 2021 ESFRI Roadmap, released in December 2021. The report outlines Europe’s existing Research Infrastructures (RIs), identifies gaps and scientific needs, and sets the stage for future strategic investments. During this period, ESFRI also introduced a new methodology for the Landscape Analysis (LA), decoupling it from the Roadmap to provide a standalone perspective on the RI landscape. Data collection for the LA was completed in 2023, with the final document expected in 2024.

In 2023, ESFRI established the Monitoring Committee to oversee the performance assessment of ESFRI Landmarks, producing the First Batch Monitoring Report for 2022-2024. This period also saw the launch of the ESFRI-EOSC Task Force, which works to align RIs with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). By fostering an integrated ecosystem of RIs, this initiative contributes to building a dynamic network of FAIR data and services for science and innovation.

ESFRI emphasized stakeholder engagement through the introduction of the Stakeholder Engagement Forum in 2022. This interactive platform has enhanced collaboration and mutual learning across the RI ecosystem. Additionally, ESFRI published several thematic reports addressing critical topics, including energy challenges, access to RIs, cooperation with industry, and support for the Ukrainian research community.

The report highlights ESFRI’s efforts to tackle key challenges such as sustainability and resilience. Initiatives focused on preparing the RI ecosystem for emerging global issues, such as climate change, further underscore ESFRI’s commitment to long-term impact.
