Technical workshop to discuss the development of emerging technology and research infrastructure to support the future production and utilisation of medical radioisotopes in Europe.

Medical radioisotopes are mainly used for diagnostics, however research is advancing on other radioisotopes to introduce new therapies and treatments for a range of health conditions.  Industry is advancing with the identification of alternative non-fission methods of production, such as accelerators. The purpose of the workshop will be to bring together the key stakeholders in the radioisotopes supply chain, to discuss future potential methods of supply of medical radioisotopes and technical feasibility, and to evolve actions to address challenges.  The workshop will cover topics on novel technology sources and potential for supply of radioisotopes; estimating future supply and demand requirements; and addressing infrastructure and logistical challenges – from present to the future.

The workshop will bring together stakeholders to give a broad representation of interest groups, including Member States, European institutions, regulators, industry, professional and specialist groups and research organisations, as well as patients and other citizens' interests.

You can register for the event by e-mail to: ENER-SAMIRA@ec.europa.eu.

Opening session

The introduction will provide a brief overview of the SAMIRA programme and the work done to date with respect to nuclear and radiation technologies, as well as the objectives for the workshop.

10:30

Session 1: Technology evolution – novel sources and potential for supply of radioisotopes.

The session will explore alternative methods and available technology for the production of radioisotopes; requirements to enable technology development; the supply chain for other radioisotopes and potential changes in future supply.

Session 2: Supply and demand – estimating future requirements

This session will discuss the expected future demand for radioisotopes; options for better data gathering on supply/demand, in collaboration with MSs, to support modelling to give a clearer picture for Europe.

15:30

16:00

Panel Discussion: Addressing infrastructure and logistical challenges – from present to the future. How to capitalise on and strengthen Europe’s global lead for the supply of radioisotopes.

This panel will discuss how to address the challenges in the production and supply of radioisotopes. It will also identify and seek to address cross-cutting challenges. The session will be structured with a series of questions for panellists to respond to.
