ESFRI Roadmap 2018 PRESENTATION: towards an interoperable and sustainable research infrastructure ecosystem for European competitiveness
07.09.2018
The fifth Strategy Report and Roadmap 2018 of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures will be presented on 11th September, in the framework of the Austrian Presidency events, at Aula der Wissenschaften in Vienna.
The ESFRI Roadmap 2018 is a vivid demonstration of the high merit and potential of European collaboration in developing visions and sustainable perspectives for an interoperable Research Infrastructure ecosystem as a key asset of Europe.
The Roadmap 2018 displays the ESFRI Landmark portfolio of 37 long-term engagements in all fields of science and 18 ESFRI Projects, with 6 new entries in the Energy, Environmental research, Health and Food and Social and Cultural Innovation domains.
An extensive Landscape Analysis outlines the context of the most relevant Research Infrastructures that are available to European scientists and developers in all domains of research. For the first time ESFRI focussed on the broad impact that specific Research Infrastructures have on all domains of science and knowledge, via the cross-disciplinary usage and the openness and interoperability of the data produced. New areas of high strategic potential in the field of social and cultural innovation are identified.
An interconnected Research Infrastructure ecosystem capable, as a whole, to address the great societal challenges is a key aspect of ESFRI strategy, building on the integration of knowledge produced at interoperable excellent Research Infrastructures by researchers from diverse disciplines. The issues of sustainability of Research Infrastructures, the impact on innovation, the construction of Open Science and the open data management are also addressed in the document.
The Roadmap is a collective work: over 250 individuals from all over Europe were involved in the permanent and the ad hoc Working Groups, the Forum and the European Commission, providing knowledge, analysis and discussion to form a collective vision for European Research Infrastructures to inspire European science policy for maximizing competitiveness.
The launch event is part of a series of events marking the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is organized by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, in close cooperation with ESFRI and the European Commission.
Among the invited participants are high level EU officials, ESFRI Delegates, representatives of RI projects and policy bodies, national and regional authorities as well as media. Giorgio Rossi, the ESFRI Chair, will present the ESFRI Roadmap 2018, the new projects will be introduced by their coordinators and strategic issues on the European Research Infrastructure ecosystem will be developed in panel discussions.
