ESFRI Chair shares insights on RI challenges with Science|Business
In his recent interview with Science|Business, José Luis Martínez, the newly appointed ESFRI Chair, discussed the challenges faced by research infrastructures amidst the energy crisis and the preparations for the upcoming 2026 roadmap.
With 80% of research infrastructures struggling due to higher energy prices, Martínez emphasized the need for long-term energy contracts and investment to make infrastructures greener and more sustainable. "Time and investment are the key to making Europe’s research infrastructures greener, more sustainable and more resilient to fluctuating energy prices" ESFRI Chair stated.
He highlighted the diversity of research infrastructures across Europe, making it challenging to find uniform solutions. ESFRI plans to conduct a study to explore green and sustainable strategies, with the possibility of integrating sustainability requirements into future projects. Regarding the 2026 roadmap, ESFRI is nearing completion of the landscape analysis and evaluation of established landmarks, aiming to present the roadmap by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
