How to reach Matera | Meeting points
Matera’s closest airport is the Bari Palese Airport. The best way to reach Matera from Bari Palese Airport is by shuttle / bus (about 1 hour travel). Shuttle service between Bari airport and Matera main hotels is available. Please contact directly your hotel for booking this service.

Bus stops in Parcheggio Piazza della Visitazione (Matera Central Station-FAL) just few minutes walking distance from Matera downtown and Palazzo Viceconte.

Guided tour in the Matera “Sassi”

Itinerary details
The tour will start and finish at Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the heart of Matera city. The meeting point will be at the large fountain of the square.
Places that will be visited:
- Churches of San Domenico (XIII century), Cavalieri di Malta (Knights of Malta, XV century) and the small cave church Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit, XI century).
- Panoramic view on “Sasso Barisano” district.
- "Palombaro Lungo", huge underground cistern discovered in 1991 and used from XIX century for collecting rainwater.
- Visit to the medieval area and the Romanesque Cathedral at Piazza Duomo with another charming panoramic view of “Sasso Barisano”.
- Entry into Sasso Caveoso district where you can enjoy the extraordinary restoration of some noble palaces and farmhouses.
- San Pietro Caveoso square and related church.
- Tour of the mysterious cave church of Saint Lucia alle Malve (IX century) with several frescoes painted between XII and XVII century.
- Most important baroque churches, Santa Chiara, Chiesa del Purgatorio and San Francesco d’Assisi.
The tour takes almost two hours. It will start at 15.00 and finish at 17.00. We recommend to wear comfortable shoes and sun hats.
