As the monitoring of ESFRI 2008 and 2010 Projects is underway along with the Pilot Review of four ESFRI Landmarks, an EoE Workshop is organized to provide the most transparent and effective high-level interaction, coordination and networking between ESFRI Research Infrastructures – RIs –and the ESFRI Strategy Working and Implementation Groups. The focus of the open discussion will be on the challenges faced by the RIs during the pre-implementation phase as well as those connected with enforcing the Landmark status.

The Exchange of Experience will expand on:

  • the evaluation method of the Scientific Case and the Assessment of Implementation of the ESFRI Projects as key elements of the ESFRI Monitoring process;
  • the update of the Scientific Case and the Assessment of Implementation and Operation of the ESFRI Landmarks as key elements of the ESFRI Periodic Review process;
  • the discussion on the framework conditions of existing ESFRI Projects to understand the requirements for moving to the implementation stage;
  • the dialogue on how to identify and overcome the main bottlenecks drawing from experience from prior monitoring and assessment processes.

The 2nd Exchange of Experience Workshop – organized by StR-ESFRI– will take place on 18th January 2017, from 9:30 to 16:00, in the Malaga University, Av. de Cervantes 2, 29071 Málaga, Spain. A social event and dinner will be organized on 17th January 2017 in the evening after the Info Day. Participants of the EoE workshop are cordially invited to the dinner.

Target group

The workshop is mainly aimed at scientific leaders and managers of ESFRI Research Infrastructures but it will be open to all interested.

Background Information

Since the first European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures developed in 2006, ESFRI has continuously worked on identifying new – or upgrades of – Research Infrastructures (RIs) of strategic interest for Europe. As a result of the 2006 Roadmap and its updates in 2008 and 2010 as well as the 2015-2016 road-mapping exercise, the ESFRI Roadmap 2016 includes 21 ESFRI Projects – RIs in preparatory or pre-implementation phase and 29 ESFRI Landmarks – RIs which are in the implementation phase or are operational. To ensure the follow-up of implementation of ESFRI Research Infrastructures as requested by the Competitiveness council in 2012 ESFRI established a comprehensive assessment and prioritization process of the infrastructure projects listed in the ESFRI Roadmap. For this reason ESFRI has developed and applies distinct and transparent evaluation, assessment, monitoring and periodic review mechanisms based on two independent processes, i.e. 1) the evaluation of the Scientific Case and 2) the Assessment of Implementation. In both cases, international and independent Experts might be involved to provide advice, but ESFRI is solely and entirely responsible of the evaluation and assessment procedures and outcomes.

The 2nd Workshop to exchange experiences and best practise will therefore focus on the Monitoring and Periodic Review of Research Infrastructures on the ESFRI Roadmap and will thus help towards a clear comprehensible, transparent and fair evaluation and monitoring process.

The Alcazaba forms part of the city´s most important archaeological collection. La Alcazaba, built between the 11th and 14thcenturies, was the palace fortress of the Muslim governors. It is built upon the remains of an older Phoenician fortress on the side of the mount of Gibralfaro, in a privileged position above the city. The grounds house an interesting exhibition room where ceramic materials of 11th to 15th century Muslim Malaga are on display. This palace is connected to the Castle of Gibralfaro by a steep mountain pathway.
