ESFRI Validation Workshop on "Monitoring of Research Infrastructures Methodology and Key Performance Indicators'
'Future Directions of ESFRI' Meeting
The meeting on 'Future Directions of ESFRI' will take place in London, on January 31st. All ESFRI delegates will be invited to take part in the discussion. Please note this is an invitation-only, internal event. Registration will open soon.
-----
ESFRI was established in 2002 with the initial mandate to support a coherent and strategy–led approach to policy making on research infrastructures in Europe and facilitate multilateral initiatives acting as an incubator for pan-European and global research infrastructures. This mandate was extended in 2004 to include the development of a Roadmap. As the ESFRI Research Infrastructures included in the first three Roadmaps (2006, 2008, 2010) were becoming more mature, ESFRI was also asked to follow-up their implementation.
In addition to this, ESFRI mandate has recently been enriched in the areas of e-Infrastructures (data-driven RIs and EOSC) and long-term sustainability (feed forward to innovation, RI monitoring, national roadmaps and funding processes), as well as to play an active role in the implementation of the ERA Roadmap.
ESFRI has extended the analysis on the whole European landscape capturing elements of the dynamical development of intersections among RIs and multidisciplinary research exploiting more RIs of the same field as well as RIs of different fields, contributing to implementing the multi-messenger approach to frontier research. The data management and re-use by RIs has developed through the years and is today one of the key assets for developing a robust and sustainable EOSC.
ESFRI has therefore the double role of pushing ahead the strategic view of an effective and efficient RI ecosystem, and to implement the Council mandates within such strategic vision.
The Forum in the coming years will have to address:
- Strategy led evolution of the RI landscape – understanding bottom-up organizational initiatives by groups of RIs, maintain a stimulus role of the Roadmap in structuring such developments for more top quality science by more scientists on Europe,
- Long-term internationalization vision, taking into account both specific global infrastructure initiatives and other world-regional dynamics,
- Organize the workload of the Forum and its Working Groups, to cope with both strategy issues and the evaluation, monitoring, updating processes for maintain the Roadmap a living document of reference by all stakeholders.
The workshop will serve as an informal discussion forum on the key issues which ESFRI needs to explore in order to effectively address the challenges outlined above.
The workshop will be limited to ESFRI Delegations.
ESFRI RIs and EOSC Workshop
ESFRI will be organising a workshop on the relationship between ESFRI Research Infrastructures (RIs) and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), in London on 30 January 2019.
The main objective of the workshop is the liaison among ESFRI, ESFRI RIs and EOSC stakeholders, in order to ensure the optimal integration of ESFRI RIs in the EOSC ecosystem. In this direction, the Workshop aims to
1. Promote sharing existing good practices and experiences and collaborating on:
- Open science policies, including domain/cross-domain ones
- Data and services’ sharing and re-use, including the adoption of FAIR principles and the appropriate criteria for reproducibility of data and research results (+R)
- Understanding strategies for federating into EOSC the good practices and services developed by the ESFRI RIs
- Understanding and discussing the architecture, access, and interfaces
- Understanding and discussing the governance and participation rules
- Planning training for developing skills
ESFRI Workshop – Monitoring of RIs, periodic update of Landmarks, use of KPIs
- follow-up of ESFRI Pilot Periodic Review Exercise with 4 ESFRI Landmarks performed in 2017.
- build on the need to develop a methodology for periodic update of ESFRI Landmarks "State of Play", defining the periodicity and appropriate, flexible KPIs.
- explore how the monitoring of Research Infrastructures can support their sustainability, taking into account the results of the Long-Term Sustainability report.
Launch of the 2018 ESFRI Roadmap on Research Infrastructures in Europe
On September 11th, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) will present the 2018 ESFRI Roadmap on Large Scale Research Infrastructures during a half-day conference in Vienna. The venue will be the Aula der Wissenschaften and the event will run from 12:00 to 18:00.
The ESFRI Roadmap identifies new Research Infrastructures (RI) of pan-European interest corresponding to the long term needs of the European research communities, covering all scientific areas, regardless of possible location.
The 2018 Roadmap consists of 18 Projects, with a high degree of maturity, and 37 Landmarks, RIs that reached the implementation phase. Since 2006, ESFRI has presented a series of updated Roadmaps supporting a coherent and strategy-led approach to the development of pan-European research infrastructures, which would ensure that scientists in Europe have access to world-class facilities enabling them to do cutting-edge research.
ESFRI Chair, Giorgio Rossi will present the 2018 ESFRI Roadmap. During the event, invited participants will discuss about the prospects and challenges posed by the new Roadmap. The event's agenda will be available later in July, and prospective participants will be invited to register for the event. This conference is part of a series of events marking the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is organised by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, in close cooperation with ESFRI and the European Commission. Please note this is an INVITATION-ONLY event.
An international Conference on the Impact of Research Infrastructures for Social Sciences and Humanities
There is a growing consensus that it is important to be able to assess the value of research infrastructures, not only for research, but also for the society at large. But currently there is no unified framework for the impact assessment of investment in research infrastructures. Various conceptual frameworks exist in parallel comprising a range of observable direct and indirect effects and longer-term impacts, in particular economic impacts. However, most of these studies and frameworks do not concentrate on Social Sciences and Humanities. SSH Research Infrastructures are the most proper tool to take into account the future of society. Their experiences and variety stress the impact of SSH RIs beyond research: it affects the vision of decision makers and social actors. Furthermore core aspects of RI benefits, such as their impact on human and social capital formation and innovation, are not sufficiently explored. In this conference we want to focus on the societal impact of RIs for SSH, i.e. we want to discuss the broad scale of types of impact and methodologies for their assessment. On this background we invite discussion about ways to increase impact, in SSH and beyond.
The International Conference on the Impact of Research Infrastructures for Social Sciences and Humanities is organised by ESFRI Strategic Working Group on Social and Cultural Innovation in collaboration with Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII, Bologna.
Info Day: European Open Science Cloud & Long-Term Sustainability of RIs
Roadmap 2018 Info Day
Following the official presentation of the ESFRI Roadmap 2018 update process at ICRI2016 in Cape Town, ESFRI organizes an Information Day on 17 January 2017 in Malaga, with the aim to provide a complete description of the requirements, the procedure and the methodology of selection of proposals and thus facilitate new submissions by ESFRI Delegations and EIROforum Members. The Roadmap Landscape Analysis of Research Infrastructures will also be presented along with information on its ongoing update process.
An Exchange of Experience Workshop will follow on 18 January, focused on the monitoring and periodic review of the Roadmap Research Infrastructures. It is targeted to ESFRI Projects & Landmarks, and will address issues related to the evaluation of the progress and challenges faced during their implementation phase and on the strengthening of the role and status of the ESFRI Landmarks.
The Info Day and the EoE Workshop will be hosted by the Spanish Secretariat of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. It is co-organised and supported by the StR-ESFRI Project - Support to Reinforce ESFRI, and the European Commission - DG Research and Innovation.
